Kanom Jeen Nam Ya in Ao Nang: A Hidden Gem for Authentic Southern Thai Food
And as a Southern Thai and a kanom jeen lover, I can tell you one thing: If we find a really good kanom jeen, there is NO way we’re stopping at just one plate. We’re definitely ordering another one.

A local food that I really want you to try if you ever travel to the south of Thailand, especially if you love trying local food is kanom jeen nam ya.
Kanom jeen is rice noodles served with different kinds of curry and every region of Thailand has its own style of curry to eat with it.
In Southern Thailand, our kanom jeen has several signature curries, and each one gives you a completely different flavor.
You’ll usually find 'nam ya kathi (yellow curry)' a fish curry made with coconut milk, a spicy and aromatic clear curry, a sweet curry made with peanuts and coconut milk (red curry), and of course 'gaeng tai pla' one of the most iconic Southern Thai curries, made with fermented fish entrails.
You can choose just one curry, like the yellow curry, or mix it with the sweet curry and gaeng tai pla. You can create your own combination and see which flavors you like best.
And honestly, you HAVE to try it with 'Southern-style fried chicken'. The combination is just… SO good.
But wait one of my favorite things about eating kanom jeen in the South is the vegetables.
When you order a plate of kanom jeen, your table can suddenly be covered with SO many different vegetables!
Most of them are local Southern vegetables, and depending on the restaurant, you might also get sweet-and-sour salad, vegetables boiled in coconut milk, pickled vegetables, or even sour mango.
And these aren’t just there to make your plate look pretty.
They help balance out the rich curry, cut through the richness, and add freshness and different textures to every bite.
And if you’re sitting there thinking, “Okay… but how am I supposed to eat all of this?”
Don’t overthink it.
Just mix and match!
Try different curries with different vegetables and figure out which combination you like the most. Pick the vegetables that make your dish taste even better.
That’s honestly the fun part of eating kanom jeen.
And as a Southern Thai and a kanom jeen lover, I can tell you one thing:
If we find a really good kanom jeen, there is NO way we’re stopping at just one plate.
We’re definitely ordering another one.
And if you’re in Ao Nang, I have a little place I want to recommend.
I actually stumbled upon this restaurant about two years ago, and it has become one of my personal hidden gems.
It’s actually always busy, and sometimes you might have to wait in a long line but trust me, it’s worth the wait.
What’s funny is that you don’t really see this place mentioned that much on food review websites, which makes it feel even more like a local spot.
Their kanom jeen is absolutely delicious — rich, flavorful, and so well-balanced. Every curry has so much depth, but none of the flavors feel too overpowering.
And if you want to try more than just kanom jeen, they also have other Southern Thai local dishes.
One of them is Khao yam, a Southern Thai rice salad made with rice, fresh herbs and vegetables, and a flavorful dressing. You mix everything together before eating it, so you get a little bit of everything in every bite.
They also have Fried chicken with rice, Chicken congee, and something you absolutely CANNOT miss…
The roti.
Oh my God. Their roti is insanely good. 😂 Seriously, if you go there, please order the roti.
And here’s another little Southern Thai food tip:
Eat your kanom jeen with Southern Thai iced tea.
The rich curry +Fried chicken + fresh vegetables + sweet creamy Thai iced tea…
Trust me. It just works.
Oh, and the restaurant is Halal, too.
This place is open super early from 5 AM until 11 AM so it’s actually a great spot for breakfast or an early morning meal.
And if you’re not a fan of fish or strong curry, don’t worry.
You can go for the Chicken congee, Fried chicken, or Roti instead.
I promise, you won’t leave disappointed.
So if you’re ever in Ao Nang, save this place and give it a try.
And if you do, let me know which curry and which combination of vegetables you liked the most!
Oh my God… my mouth is watering just writing about it right now.
